2018 International Forum on China's Economy and Policy

On Nov 27, 2018, the Policy Innovation and Co-ordination Office (PICO) of the Government of the HKSAR and the National Academy of Economic Strategy of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) jointly held the “International Forum on China's Economy and Policy 2018” (Forum) at the Central Government Offices, Tamar, Hong Kong. Fung Business Intelligence and the Chinese Institute of Hong Kong were the co-organisers.

Under the theme “Forty Years of Reform and Opening Up”, leaders, experts and scholars from the Mainland, overseas and Hong Kong reviewed China’s achievements in reform and opening up in the past 40 years, and at the same time, analysed from a macro perspective, how Hong Kong can make the best use of its unique strengths in supporting China's implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Development.

The Forum commenced with welcoming remarks from Mr. Paul Chan Mo-po, Financial Secretary, the Government of the HKSAR and Mr. Xie Fuzhan, President of CASS. Keynote speakers on the day included Dr. Victor Fung, Chairman of Fung Group, Professor He Dexu, Director of National Academy of Economic Strategy, CASS, and Professor Long Guoqiang, Vice President of Development Research Center of the State Council.

To echo with the theme of the Forum, Dr. Victor Fung gave a speech from the perspective of an entrepreneur, about Hong Kong’s pivotal role in contributing to the development of China’s 40 years of reform and opening up. He also shared his views on the positioning of Hong Kong in the context of the current Sino-US trade disputes.

Mr. Chang Ka Mun, Managing Director of Fung Business Intelligence, moderated a discussion session with a focus on “Enterprises and Forty Years of Reform and Opening Up” where Mr. Edward Yau Tang-wah, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, the Government of the HKSAR, Professor Michael J. Enright, Professor of the Faculty of Business and Economics, the University of Hong Kong and other specialists shared their thoughts and perspectives.

About 300 participants attended the Forum, including experts, scholars, and representatives of overseas institutions in Hong Kong, and guests from think tanks, business sector, professional bodies and local and foreign chambers of commerce.
